Experience of psychological distress as physical symptoms

โœ…Occur as :

1- with physical illness :
As part of emotional component of medical disease -> e.g, patient with tumor present with pain post-radiation (investigations completely normal) -> this is due to fear from return of tumor so need reassurance

2- with depressive illness :

  • somatic complain are common will affective disorder
  • specially in children, elderly

3- as a core of illness (somatic syndrome)

  • GIT = IBS
  • gynecology = chronic pelvic pain syndrome
  • Rheumatology = Fibromyalgia
  • CVS = atypical chest pain
  • ENT = globus hystericus (sensation of having lump in the throat or trouble to swallow for which there is no medical cause)
  • Neurology = tension headache, pseudo-seizures

4- as part of long standing pattern of behavior (somatisation disorder)
