✅Definition
Experience of psychological distress as physical symptoms
✅Occur as :
1- with physical illness :
As part of emotional component of medical disease -> e.g, patient with tumor present with pain post-radiation (investigations completely normal) -> this is due to fear from return of tumor so need reassurance
2- with depressive illness :
- somatic complain are common will affective disorder
- specially in children, elderly
3- as a core of illness (somatic syndrome)
- GIT = IBS
- gynecology = chronic pelvic pain syndrome
- Rheumatology = Fibromyalgia
- CVS = atypical chest pain
- ENT = globus hystericus (sensation of having lump in the throat or trouble to swallow for which there is no medical cause)
- Neurology = tension headache, pseudo-seizures
4- as part of long standing pattern of behavior (somatisation disorder)
