Must be given orally for pseudomembranous colitis with Clostridium difficile infection as works in bowel lumen

About :

Nitroimidazoles

Useful against anaerobic bacteria and some protozoal infections

Action

Broken into toxic compounds which effect bacterial metabolism

Activtiy

Anaerobic bacteria including Bacteroides fragilis

Trichomonas, Entamoeba histolytica, Clostridium Tetanus

Interactions

Disulfiram effect with alcohol – flushing, abdominal pain, hypotension

Reduced Warfarin breakdown – ↑ INR

lithium and phenytoin toxicity, porphyria.

Cautions

Prolonged courses cause peripheral neuropathy.

Contraindications

Take advice in Pregnancy and breastfeeding,Porphyria

Side effects

Nausea, vomiting,diarrhoea, metallic taste, hepatitis

Headache, Sensory neuropathy with prolonged usage > 4 weeks

Seizures following high doses
